Progress on the Waterfront

Last summer, the City of Brewer announced its intent to redevelop the waterfront area. To begin the redevelopment program, the City established a citizen's committee composed of area residents and business owners to guide the waterfront planning effort.

This committee, known as the Waterfront Advisory  Committee,  met nearly a dozen times and held the first of several public hearings to discuss the future of our waterfront.  In early March, the Committee recommended that we take the next step in the redevelopment process - to request proposals from contractors interested in helping us develop a master plan for the waterfront area.  The process of obtaining help with our master plan is underway, and with continued input from Brewer citizens, the final plan should benefit us all.

We have also made progress toward the establishment of a commercial early March, the Committee recommended that we take the next step in the redevelopment process - to request proposals from contractors interested in helping us develop a master plan for the waterfront area.  The process of obtaining help with our master plan is underway, and with continued input from Brewer citizens, the final plan should benefit us all.

We have also made progress toward the establishment of a commercial loan pool to help area businesses finance improvements to their facilities and properties. Most of the financial institutions in the area have agreed in concept to participate, and our hope is to finalize an agreement and roll out the program this summer.  We are also trying to identify ways to help residential owners as well - more on that topic in the next issue.

In the meantime, if you have any ideas about how we can improve the waterfront area, please share them.  Feel free to call City Hall at 989-7500, or send us your thoughts by e-mail at PenobscotLanding@BrewerME.org
