Plan for Penobscot Landing Moves Forward

The City of Brewer has held two of three scheduled public meetings on August 31 and September 21 at the Brewer Auditorium to present concepts and plans for the redevelopment of “Penobscot Landing,” the name given to our City’s waterfront area. The plans presented are the result of many months of research and market studies, citizen input, and interviews.

Over fifty people packed into the Brewer Auditorium to see the initial concepts for the area, including: an entertainment district with small niche retail shops, restaurants, small clubs, and a public pier; a full-service marina; a waterfront trail running from the Penobscot Bridge to Eastern Park; a public market and farmer’s market; a seasonal skating rink; additional public / recreational space; condominium housing; a bed-and-breakfast facility; and aesthetic improvements to streets and sidewalks.

One pivotal element of the plan addressed the need to stabilize the land along the Penobscot River. Engineering consultants from CES, Inc. reported that over 4,000 linear feet of crib-work has either failed or is about to fail, resulting in serious erosion of our waterfront properties. The cost to stabilize the shore is estimated to be $5.6 million. The City Manager and Development Director are already working to secure State and Federal funding to help meet these costs.

Feedback at and since the public meetings indicates strong support from our community for the concepts in the draft redevelopment plan. Ideas discussed in the first two hearings are being incorporated into the final redevelopment plan. One additional public meeting is scheduled for October 19 to discuss plan implementation. Members of our community can see the plan at City Hall, and can provide input either by calling Drew Sachs at 989-7500, or by sending an e-mail message to PenobscotLanding@BrewerME.org .
